Henri Émile Benoît Matisse, known simply as Henri Matisse, was a French painter, sculptor, and printmaker and one of the world’s greatest artists, and a personal favorite of mine. His unconventional art transformed the way future Great Artists used color, form, and expression, and is one of the most influential artists of the 20th century and the modern art movement.
MEET MATISSE
Born on December 31, 1869, in France, Matisse initially pursued a career in law before discovering his true passion for art. He became a prominent figure of Fauvism, a movement characterized by its bold use of color and energetic brushwork. Matisse’s innovative approach to art revolutionized the traditions of form and perspective, showcasing his ability to capture the essence of his subjects through simplified yet powerful art pieces.
Throughout his career, Matisse explored various mediums, including painting, sculpture, drawing, and printmaking. His paintings often depicted everyday scenes, still lifes, and figures, all characterized by vivid colors and fluid lines. Matisse used bold colors and unexpected shape combinations, which wasn’t the norm of art at the time. His masterful use of color allowed him to create works that exuded energy and emotion.
Matisse’s artistic journey was marked by constant experimentation and a desire to push the boundaries of traditional art forms. In his later years, due to health issues that limited his mobility, he turned to cut-paper collages, which he called “painting with scissors.” These collages became a defining aspect of his late career. Despite his physical limitations, Matisse’s creativity remains undiminished, and his paper cutouts are considered some of his most iconic and influential works.
Matisse passed away on November 3, 1954, in Nice, France.

My favorite thing about Mattise is his sense of color, he is absolutely fearless with colors and lines!
